Strong pressure differences in Europe

Between an extensive high with its core over Scotland and the storm Juliette with its core over the Gulf of Genoa, the weather in Central Europe was characteris by large pressure differences today. Nature tries to balance out large pressure differences with correspondingly strong winds. It was stormy in various regions of Central Europe: Mistral, Bise, Nordföhn and Bora are the key words and are describ in

Ground data analysis from 09 UTC: Today’s meteorologist was able to mark some isobars between the high over Scotland and the storm Juliette (L) over the Gulf of Genoa. The cloud blows the cold continental air to the north side of the Alps.

Large pressure difference between Geneva and Zurich

We concentrate on the bise which was exceptionally strong today

The pressure differences were not only strong over Central Europe. The pressure difference within Switzerland was also large, for example between Geneva and Zurich-Kloten, at up to 8 hPa. This is a rare occurrence. The relatively cold continental air, which was carri by the bise from the northeast to the northern side of the Alps, probably further increas the gradient.

Bise strongest in the west
Typically, the Bise is strongest in western Switzerland. To explain why this is the case, we must remember the topography of the Mittelland: in the east it is relatively open and narrows towards the west between the Jura and the Alps. This accelerates the wind.

Typical wind gusts during gusty storms
The well-known autumn and winter storms were mostly west to southwest storms. Bisen storms, on the other hand, are much rarer.

Typically, storms from the northeast reach wind gusts of around 90 km/h. Stronger gusts are extremely rare. The strongest wind gust measur in Geneva in connection with a bise reach 95 km/h on November 14, 2004. In Changins, a slightly elevat station near Nyon, the if you are not satisfi with the select image, delete it strongest gust of a bise was record on April 11, 2005 at 108 km/h.

The wind spes are somewhat higher over the Jura mountains. Here the bise can reach alb directory wind spes of up to 150 km/h. On February 13, 1984, 178 km/h were measur on La Dôle.

Further east, however, the bise is, as mention, much less strong. In Zurich-Kloten, for example, the strongest bise reach gusts of around 75 km/h.
