COP29! the 29th annual UN Climate Change Conference! takes place in Baku COP29 and from 11 to 22 November 2024. Each COP is an important opportunity for international cooperation on climate change! but COP29 will particularly focus on the availability of finance for developing countries to support climate action.
COP29 is already controversial
As Azerbaijan’s economy is heavily dependent on fossil fuels! a major driver of climate change. This means that the Azerbaijani government! which will chair the summit! has strong reasons to avoid rapid multilateral progress towards a fossil-fuel transition.
COP29 requires significant progress! as climate action falls specific database by industry far short of both countries’ COP29 and pledges and what scientists believe is needed. The impacts of climate change are rapidly increasing! and in many countries there is growing resistance to governments’ policies to reduce fossil fuel use. For Ukraine! this situation presents a unique opportunity to update and legitimize the Victory Plan! which was announced by President Zelensky on October 16.
What is COP ?
The “Conference of the Parties” or “COP” is an annual think about the idea of selling event that brings together governments of countries that have committed to environmental action within the framework of the United Nations (UN).
COPs are attended by governments or “parties” that are party to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change or international environmental agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol (1997) or the landmark and legally binding Paris Agreement (2015). At COPs! world leaders! ministers and negotiators gather to discuss and approve plans to jointly combat climate change and its impacts. Typically! civil society! business! international organisations and the media “observe” the process! ensuring transparency! accountability and a broader perspective on the discussions.
