Persistent low pressure in the Mediterranean region

The media has already reported how the low pressure system “Juliette” brought an unusually large amount of snow to the Balearic Islands two days ago. In the past 48 hours, this low pressure system has moved eastwards and again brought a lot of fresh snow, this time especially to the French Mediterranean island of Corsica.

Within 48 hours, considerable amounts of fresh snow fell in the mountains of Corsica. Up to 70 cm of fresh snow fell on the Mannicia (approx. 2360 m above sea level). In total, there is now 255 cm of snow there. There is also enough snow at medium altitudes in the Asco region for good winter sports conditions.
Meteo France even issued avalanche levels 3 and 4 for the mountain regions.

Was it a “medicane”?

As “Juliette” moved from the Balearic Islands to the Tyrrhenian Sea, the low alb directory pressure system intensified and was briefly classified as “Medicane” on social media (see box for explanations). If you look at the measured gusts, barely more than 75 km/h were recorded. Juliette should therefore be described as a “Mediterranean Tropical Storm”. “Tropical” because, according to an analysis, a phase with a “warm core” was evident. At least you could clearly see a typical “eye” in the center of the low pressure system.
